THE STATE FLAG of the Kyrgyz Republic is a red panel with a sun disk in the center. Surrounding the sun, forty golden rays stretch outward. A “tiunduk”, the top part of the Kyrgyz “yurt”, is portrayed in the center of the disk. The flag’s symbols have no political meaning. The life-giving sun is a symbol of eternal life, the “tiunduk” represents not only the stability of home, ways of living and centuries-old popular traditions, but the deep philosophical unity of heaven and earth

THE NATIONAL EMBLEM as a symbol of the Kyrgyz Republic was approved by the Parliament in January 1994. It depicts a blue circle in the center of a white falcon with wings spread in a white frame. In the background it shows a lake Issuk-Kul and the spurs of Ala-Too, as well as a rising sun with golden rays; on both sides of the circle – cotton stalks and wheat ears.

The Kyrgyz Republic was formed on the 31st of August 1991, when the Parliament proclaimed Kyrgyzstan as an independent, democratic and secular state with its own constitution and indivisible territory.
Kyrgyzstan is located in the north-eastern part of Central Asia, in the heart of the Eurasian continent. Its territory consists of 199,900 square km. It stretches 900 km from east to west and 425 km from north to south.

The borders of the Kyrgyz Republic generally follow natural boundaries: mountain ranges and rivers. Kyrgyzstan is bordered by China, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
The Kyrgyz Republic is a country remarkable for its natural beauty. Majestic sunshine and high snow-covered mountains give way to rolling heights that are soaring up to 4000-7000 m above sea level. The Tien-Shan mountain range (“Mountains of Heaven”), which is a leading feature of the country, covers around 100,000 square kilometers and extends for some 2,500 kilometers. About a third of the country is permanently under snow. Over 90 per cent of the territory is above 1,500 meters and 41 per cent is above 3,000 meters.

Kyrgyzstan is also well known for its gorgeous swift rivers, beautiful mountain lakes and unique nut forests. Among other dominating features is the Lake Issyk-Kul, which is situated at an altitude of over 1,600 meters above sea level. It is the second largest lake in the world after Lake Titicaca in South America. The volume of the Issuk-Kul Lake is 1,738 cubic km and the depth is 668 m.
The ancient cities of Kyrgyzstan like Tash-Rabat, Osh, Uzgen, Balasagun were situated on the caravan routes of the Great Silk Road. They were among other rich trade cities actively involved in the dialogue between civilizations of West and East from distant ancient times up to the Middle Ages.
